A study of Berlin: from elegant palaces and parks to commercial and industrial sectors, investigates the German capital's cultural transitions from 1870 to 1945. Selected dramas, films, and novels offer insight into the political culture of a city constantly in the process of remaking itself.

Learning Outcomes

  1. To become acquainted with Berlin's topography, history and culture
  2. To examine the extent to which the authoritarian past of Prussian Berlin may have contributed to the rise of Hitler
  3. To identify characteristics of the city and its population that have endured despite dramatic changes to its political system
  4. To study its prominent personalities, and to recognize how each individual shaped the city’s politics, architecture or spirit
  5. To understand the city's place in European history from (roughly) 1871 to 1933
  6. Local and Global Perspectives: Students will enhance their intercultural understanding of languages, cultures, and histories of local societies and the global issues to which these relate (CCI LO1)
  7. Aesthetic Inquiry and Creative Expression: Students will engage with artistic or creative objects (e.g., visual art, theatrical works, film) in different media and from a range of cultural traditions (CCI LO2)
