This course is designed to give you strong technical and conceptual skills in video production. This course will prepare you for future video work in film, journalism, media and communications, studio art, and can be useful across many other disciplines. You will learn to create several complete film and audio projects, each challenging you to explore new skills. Class time will be divided into lectures, screenings, and mostly in-class labs and critique. Homework will consist of readings, writing responses, shooting, editing and screenings.

Learning Outcomes

  1. The student will be able to develop habits of creativity to generate ideas, including learning how to storyboard a narrative structure and film sequence.
  2. The student will be able to operate a camera and record clean sound.
  3. The student will be able to manage an editorial workflow, from logging and bins to rendering.
  4. The student will be able to use a range of video production strategies and styles and choose one that best embodies their idea.
  5. Students will be able to write and publish digitally and analyze and produce audiovisual content in order to communicate through a variety of digital media. (CCD LO1)
  6. Students will be able to interpret, report, and synthesize data and present it in various formats visually. (CCD LO3)
  7. Students will enhance their intercultural understanding of languages, cultures, and histories of local societies and the global issues to which these relate. (CCI LO1)
  8. Students will engage with artistic or creative objects (e.g., visual art, theatrical works, film) in different media and from a range of cultural traditions. (CCI LO2)
  9. Students will demonstrate awareness of ethical considerations relating to specific societal problems, values, or practices (historical or contemporary; global or local) and learn to articulate possible solutions to prominent challenges facing societies and institutions today so as to become engaged actors at various levels in our interconnected world.
